Curriculum

Where to buy, what to buy…

  • All About Reading & All About Spelling

This phonics-based reading and spelling curriculum is a fantastic way to make sure your young readers are being taught explicit phonics instruction as they learn how to read. It is intended to help struggling readers (i.e., students with dyslexia) as well as neuro-typical kids. The lessons include many hands-on games, and the readers include both beautiful illustrations and compelling stories.

  • Cathy Duffy Reviews

Cathy Duffy has been reviewing homeschool curriculum and materials for years. Her site is the go-to for searching out “all the curriculum.” Search within her site, or purchase some of her helpful guides to homeschooling.

  • Christian Book

They have a designated Homeschool section and provide both Christian and secular curriculum. I love checking the prices here against other sites, as often I can find a discounted price on ChristianBook. Check it often for sales & sign up for their communications to alert you to sales, as they run various ones throughout the year.

  • The Critical Thinking Company

The Critical Thinking Company provides what its name implies…books and curriculum to help develop kids’ critical thinking skills. Their offerings run the gamut from skill specific to covering all the school subjects. They even have a “Special Offers” section where you can get special discounts and even free ebooks sometimes.

  • Explode the Code

This curriculum can be used independently. However, I have used it in combination with All About Reading as a phonics practice workbook. We usually do two pages per day on concepts that we have previously covered in All About Reading. They also have an ONLINE version - which I have not used - but could be worth checking out if you are interested.

  • Khan Academy

This nonprofit company’s mission is to “provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.” Courses are self-paced and provide practice problems and tracks mastery of each unit. Parents or Teachers can create accounts to keep track of multiple kids’ learning progress. Honestly, it is a great way for adults to learn as well!! Some of the course offerings are college-level material!

  • Rainbow Resource

This site is designed specifically to provide parents with curriculum and educational materials. It is one of my go-tos for checking prices against other retail sites. They also offer printed catalogs you can request if you like a paper copy to flip through.

  • The Tuttle Twins Curriculum

I originally purchased their children’s book series as a set of ten. Since then they have added two additional titles to the series, and, now have books for young adults as well as a brand new American history curriculum! I love the story-based format. My third grader highly recommends their books, including the history volumes!

If you are interested in free-market economics and teaching American history with a focus on IDEAS rather than dates, these books might be for you.

  • The Well-Trained Mind Press

Focusing on a classical educational style, Well-Trained Mind Press offers curriculum from reading to writing to history and beyond. In my homeschool, I have enjoyed using the First Language Lessons curriculum to teach Grammar in an easily accessible way for early elementary ages. Their “Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home” Is a fantastic resource I have in my personal library as a parent/teacher resource.
